Summer Enrichment Camp Instructor

Location:

Multiple Locations, Nationwide

Employment type:

Part-Time, Temporary

Pay Range:

$25-40/hr

Position Overview
We hire Summer Camp Instructors to lead one week camps hosted at schools and community centers. Each camp has a specific focus such as STEM, coding, engineering, art, filmmaking, chess, sports and games, and other hands on enrichment. Students are typically ages 6–12 (grades K–6).

This is seasonal, part time work. Camps run week by week and assignments depend on site needs and enrollment. Many instructors teach multiple one week camps across the summer, but we do not guarantee any specific number of weeks, hours, or assignments. We work around instructor availability and aim to assign instructors to as many weeks as possible when there is a strong fit.

  • Camps are usually taught in blocks of 3 hours or 6 hours per day.

  • Common block times are 9:00 AM–12:00 PM and 1:00 PM–4:00 PM, though some sites may shift start or end times by 30–60 minutes.

  • Instructors may be scheduled for a single block or a full day depending on enrollment and staffing needs.

  • Some prep and setup time is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a safe, structured, and engaging camp experience using our provided curriculum and materials.

  • Manage a group of students and maintain clear routines, expectations, and positive behavior support.

  • Deliver hands on activities across enrichment, academic support, and physical play as appropriate to the camp theme and site schedule.

  • Supervise students actively at all times including transitions, outdoor time, and dismissal.

  • Coordinate with site staff and Athena leadership to keep the day running smoothly.

  • Handle basic setup and cleanup of materials and keep spaces organized.

  • Communicate promptly about attendance issues, behavior concerns, or safety incidents.

  • Suggest optional activities or enhancements when appropriate, with prior approval from Athena.

Experience and Qualifications
Required:

  • Experience working with children in a structured setting (school, camp, afterschool, childcare, tutoring, coaching, or youth programs).

  • Strong classroom management and the ability to lead a group with confidence and calm authority.

  • Reliability, punctuality, and professional communication.

May be required depending on location or site:

  • Background check and clearance requirements.

Preferred:

  • Experience leading enrichment activities (STEM, coding, art, music, sports, theater, chess, etc.).

  • Prior summer camp or expanded learning program experience.

  • Ability to adapt pacing and keep a wide range of learners engaged.

Staffing and Class Size
Class sizes and staffing vary by site. Some camps are staffed with a single instructor, while others may have assistants or a second instructor, especially when enrollment is higher. Staffing is based on enrollment and site requirements and cannot be guaranteed in advance.

What to Expect
This role is best for instructors who want flexible summer work and enjoy leading hands on activities with kids. We aim to match instructors to camps where they are confident and effective, and we prioritize instructors who demonstrate strong performance and reliability. At the same time, camp weeks and hours depend on enrollment and site scheduling, so assignments are not guaranteed.
